1 In his book The Problem of Pain one of the questions Lewis addressed himself to was: how to account for the occurrence of pain in a universe which is the creation of an all-good God, and in creatures who are not morally sinful. His chapter on ‘Animal Pain’ provoked a counter-inquiry from the late C. E. M. Joad, who was Head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of London. The result was this controversy.
